New Delhi: The Government of India is intensifying its turmeric export efforts through the Spices Board’s “Sustainability in Spice Sector through Progressive, Innovative and Collaborative Interventions for Export Development” (SPICED) scheme, aimed at boosting India’s position in the global spice trade.
Under the SPICED initiative, the Spices Board is implementing a series of targeted measures to enhance turmeric exports.
These include:
- Food safety and quality certifications to meet international standards
- Post-harvest quality upgrades and value addition support
- Training programmes for turmeric growers and entrepreneurs
- Quality evaluation of export consignments via accredited laboratories
- Domestic and international buyer-seller meets to connect farmers, processors, and global buyers

To harness turmeric’s full potential, the Government established the National Turmeric Board on October 4, 2023.
The board’s objectives include promoting value-added turmeric products, conducting market research, improving export infrastructure, strengthening sustainable supply chains, ensuring quality compliance, and supporting research on turmeric’s medicinal and wellness properties.
India’s Performance in Global Turmeric Trade:
According to Spices Board data, India contributed 66% of the world’s turmeric exports in 2024, with export volumes of 176,325 MT in 2024–25.
The country’s turmeric export value rose sharply to $341.54 million in 2024–25 from $226.58 million in the previous year.

- Kerala – $46.77 million

- Bangladesh – 34,073 MT
- UAE – 25,135 MT
- USA – 8,536 MT
- Malaysia – 8,825 MT
- Morocco – 9,390 MT
Minister of State for Commerce & Industry, Jitin Prasada, informed the Lok Sabha that these initiatives align with the Government’s commitment to improving farmer incomes, expanding global reach, and ensuring India’s leadership in the turmeric export sector.
